I Knew Defence Would Be Important But I Also Looked To Dominate Bowlers: Prithvi Shaw

A few days after the retirement of Sachin Tendulkar from international cricket, a 14-year-old batsman namely Pritivi Shaw grabbed limelight when he played an innings of 546 in the school cricket in Mumbai, once a record. From that day, he was tagged as the next Sachin Tendulkar.

He took his time as Shaw first played for Mumbai in the junior cricket before graduating to India U19. He may be tagged as next Sachin, but he showed the style of Sehwag playing for India U19 as just like Viru, Shaw played with utmost confidence, looking to clear the fence on most occasions.

Today, when he finally got a chance to play Duleep Trophy, Shaw grabbed it both the hands as he became the youngest ever batsman to score a century in the final of Duleep Trophy. He played an innings of 154 on an opening day, before getting out in the last session of the day.

Till then, he had already left his impact on the field. At the end of the day, Shaw revealed the secret behind this innings and also told how skipper’s Dinesh Karthik advice helped him,

“I was told by DK Bhai (Dinesh Karthik) not to play any risky shot. I did not have any specific plans but patience had to be exercised on this pitch. I just stayed positive. I knew defence would be important but I also looked to dominate the bowler. My game is always aimed at taking the initiative and it worked today. He is a very positive player and I gained a lot from his guidance. This tournament has been a nice learning process for me. An important lesson learnt in this innings was to pick the ball to hit,” Shaw said.

With this innings, Shaw gave one more reason to compare him to Master Baster as just like him, he already struck a century on his Ranji Trophy, and Duleep Trophy debut and only tournament which remains is Irani Cup. Shaw could have played Irani Cup in the last season had Mumbai defeated Gujarat in the final of Ranji Trophy, but now, he has to wait for his chance.

The opportunity could come next year, maybe for Mumbai or Rest of India squad and if Shaw can achieve that rare feat, that it would be none less than a coincidence.

Nevertheless, Shaw has started this domestic season on a high, and the Mumbai opener will look to continue the same form, to find a place for himself in the national squad soon.
