I Never Said ‘Fixing’ About the 2011 Final – Arjuna Ranatunga

Few days after sensationally alleging that the 2011 World Cup final between India and Sri Lanka was fixed, former Sri Lanka captain Arjuna Ranatunga has taken a U-turn.

Both India and Sri Lanka had entered the final on the back of some brilliant performances, however, the Men in Blue outclassed the Mahela Jayawardene-led side by six wickets to win their second World Cup. And while the title-decider at the Wankhede Stadium was a nerve-wracking experience for the fans of both the teams, as the game swung from one side to another until MS Dhoni sealed the game with a six, Ranatunga suspected foul play.

“I was also in India giving commentaries at the time. When we lost, I was distressed, and I had doubt,” Ranatunga said. “We must investigate what happened to Sri Lanka at the 2011 World Cup final,” he told last month. “I cannot reveal everything now, but one day I will. There must be an inquiry.”

However, the World Cup-winning skipper has now stated that he never said that the match was fixed but was just demanding an investigation into the game.

“I never said ‘fixing’ about the 2011 final. I said, ‘do an investigation’. There were a lot of concerns we all went through, and that is the reason when I had to speak, I said ‘do an investigation on that particular game’. I never said A or B or C got involved in that. A lot of people had concerns,” Ranatunga told The Indian Express.

Ranatunga also came down heavily on Sri Lankan cricket’s administration again. After the group-round exit in the Champions Trophy and ODI series defeat to Zimbabwe at home, the Islanders were whitewashed by India in Test series and are looking set to suffer a similar fate after losing the first four games of the ongoing five-match ODI series. However, Ranatunga refrained from blaming the players and instead took a shot at the officials.

“I think the worst part is, to tell you honestly, our administration is very poor. Cricket is run by gamblers and cricket has become a gambling game. So you can’t blame the players. I don’t agree with some of the things happening today, but unfortunately, we don’t have a single person who has played international cricket in the cricket board. Some of these administrators were kept out for a long period by the former regime, because they were not suitable. That’s where the entire thing has gone wrong,” he said.
