On the sidelines of the ongoing tri-series in the Caribbean, Australian batsman, and former T20I captain George Bailey has stated that he should have been selected in the team for the World T20 in India earlier this year. Bailey, who led Australia in 2 T20 World Cups, opened up about the challenges of leading a side.
While discussing about his T20I career, the right hander said that he would have loved to be a part of Australia’s squad for the World T20. Australia had a terrible outing in India, as they crashed out after the Super 10 and lacked an experienced batsman in the middle order. Bailey has also done moderately well leading the Kings XI Punjab in IPL in 2014 and 2015.
“I would have really liked to have been part of the World T20 and I felt like I’d done everything I could to put my name there in front of the selectors,” Bailey said. “But they went in a different direction, and that’s alright, they’re entitled to do that. “You certainly sleep easier as a player knowing you’ve done everything you can and you haven’t missed opportunities to put your name out there.”
Bailey also divulged details about leading a side in any form of the game. “I found it a really challenging format to captain just because the way it’s so fragmented in terms of very rarely having access to the best team,” Bailey said. “You mainly get your team together for the WT20 so you just get no continuity. “It’s very hard to remember actually who was in your team for the last game. So in terms of leading the team, I found that quite challenging and quite frustrating.”
