Former Indian wicketkeeper-batsman, Parthiv Patel has said that Rohit Sharma should lead team India in the T20 format and should captain the side in the 2021 ICC T20 World Cup. Patel announced retirement from all forms of cricket yesterday.
Just after his retirement, Parthiv’s big statement should not go down too well with his former RCB skipper and the current captain of the Indian cricket team across all formats, Virat Kohli.
Parthiv Patel Backs Rohit Sharma To Lead India In The T20I Format
“Rohit Sharma has shown us how to build a team. He has shown us how to win a tournament. I think there is no harm in giving him the captaincy in one format. This will also relieve Virat Kohli of some pressure,” Parthiv was quoted as saying to Sports Tak.
“With him (Rohit) winning so many tournaments, it will be interesting to see how he takes decisions under pressure. Mumbai Indians does not have a settled team every season, but Rohit Sharma has shown that he knows how to build players and show results,” he stated.
“According to me for the T20 World Cup, if Rohit Sharma is fit to play, he should be given the captaincy ahead of the tournament,” Parthiv added.
Rifts Have Emerged Between Rohit Sharma And Virat Kohli Over The Years
It was after the ICC 2019 Cricket World Cup that rumours of a rift between Rohit and Virat have taken the Indian cricket by storm. The rift was clearly visible in this year’s IPL as both the skippers didn’t even face each other when they met for the first time in IPL 2020.
Rohit’s unavailability in the Indian team on the Australian tour came as a massive blow for a lot of cricket fans and experts and legends of the game have questioned his position in team India. Reportedly, the BCCI held talks between both the players after Virat’s statement on Rohit’s unavailability prior to the Australian tour.
