I Was Being Childish: Joe Root Admits After Kicking Water Bottle 1

England batsman Joe Root has revealed about his anger post his dismissal after the first day of the fifth test against India. The talented vice-captain Root was looking in fine form as his innings progressed smoothly but yet again failed to convert his knock into a hundred.

The 25-year old was out at 88, as he was caught behind by Parthiv Patel in one of the slightest of edge. Root was given not out by the on-field umpire but the Indian captain Virat Kohli was absolutely convinced of the nick and went for a review and the ultra edge suggested there is a feather-like edge on the bat as Root fell after a brilliant knock.

However, the 25-year old looked angry going back to the dugout as he was seen kicking the water bottle and also smashed a boundary rope while going back to the dressing room post his dismissal.

“I was convinced I did not hit it. The technology suggests otherwise but it is bitterly disappointing when you are convinced that there was nothing. Look at the keeper’s reaction. He was not interested either. Kohli just went with his gut [for the review] and it worked out. It is bitterly disappointing and frustrating,” said Root.

“The bat is not near the floor, so I have to take it on the chin. I might have got a fine edge on it but I did not hear a noise, did not feel anything on the bat. It could be one that bypassed me and is genuinely out. I was probably a bit childish with my reaction as I walked off, but playing international cricket you are going to be disappointed when you feel that you have been hard done by.”

Root has ensured that he kept the England innings steady after the visitors lost both the openers cheaply. But the right-hander yet again failed to score a century after being tested by Indian spinners in the first session.

“It’s been a theme throughout the year, something to ask Santa for and hopefully we can sort it out for next year,” he said. “I would be lying if I said I am not frustrated about it. But my game is in good order, I am playing well. It is something to keep in the back of my mind but it is not going to change the way I am playing.”

The Chennai cyclone meant English players did not manage to get a proper net session to practice before the game. However, Joe Root spent 30 minutes on Thursday batting on the road outside the ground facing tennis balls fired in by batting coach Mark Ramprakash.

“My feet were all over the place against the seamers in Mumbai so I wanted to try a few things out. We tried to do it on the tennis courts, they were not ready so the road was the firmest surface we could find and I managed to get a few things sorted.”
