I Was Facing Around 700 to 1,000 Balls Every Day – Mayank Agarwal

The top-order batsman from Karnataka, Mayank Agarwal has been in tremendous form in the ongoing Ranji season scoring tons of runs.

Eager to prove his worth, Mayank slammed 176 against Delhi after his brilliant unbeaten triple century against Maharashtra. Mayank had a poor start to this season getting out on zero in both the innings against Hyderabad; however, he made it up by scoring 90 and an unbeaten 133 in the last match he played against Uttar Pradesh.

Indian international and his Karnataka teammate Manish Pandey recently admitted that,

“It’ll be easy for him to score about 1,000 runs (this season) if he keeps batting this way.”

Mayank is inching closer to the four-figure mark, as he tops the Ranji chart with 757 runs with an average of 126.16. Mayank Agarwal in an exclusive chat to Cricket Country talked extensively about the changes he made and his preparation going into this Ranji Trophy.
The 26-year-old Mayank gave all the credit to his batting coach RX Murali for his success. Mayank emphasised about skill-based training and giving the technique a back seat. He further admitted his coach would make situations and he had to respond to it, often leaving balls and often playing.

This has helped him to understand his game and mindset better, revealed the attacking opener.

“Murali has worked hard on me and lot of credit goes to him. These are four-day games, and we focused on upping the quality and quantity. I was facing around 700 to 1,000 balls every day. Again, credit to the coach for delivering me that,” Agarwal stated.

Mayank who rose to fame after the U-19 World Cup in New Zealand and the subsequent stint in the Indian Premier League (IPL). An ardent fan former India international Virender Sehwag, he feels Sehwag can’t get copied.

“I love to watch him bat. You can’t copy him. Be it playing style or him as a person; he is unique. I can’t compare myself to this Indian great. I don’t believe in comparisons,” he signed off.

Karnataka has had an exciting Ranji Trophy this season and has already sealed the quarterfinal berth with one match still to play.
