Former Australia skipper, Steven Smith has spilled beans on the toughest three months of his career, admitting that he needed a break to overcome “mental fatigue” that made him take some “horrible decisions.”

Meanwhile, Smith made a modest comeback with a fifty helping his side to a narrow win. Furthermore, the fans welcomed him well and gave a standing ovation as he left the field. Playing for the Toronto Nationals in the debut season of Global T20, Smith had a shaky start but found his confidence quickly.

Talking to the reporters, Smith admitted that he was nervous ahead of the game.

I normally don’t get real nervous before I play but I’ll be real honest, I was a bit nervous today,” Smith said. “You know, three months off and I haven’t hit that many balls back home, I’ve had a couple of nets but … I haven’t had a hit on turf,” he added.

Speaking publicly since the emotional interview, Smith revealed that he went through many ups and downs. However, he had the support of his family, his manager, and few close friends.

I’ve had times, particularly watching the boys play in England – and not play as well as they could have and England play extremely well – it was hurting me that I couldn’t go out and help them … win games,” he said. “And when they hopped on the plane to go over there I had some emotions that were a bit down,” he added.

Furthermore, the prolific run-scorer said that he was mentally fatigued after the Ashes series. Moreover, those mental blocks compelled him to make horrible decisions.

It’s obviously come under some ordinary circumstances but I was really mentally fatigued after the Ashes… I think back to the one-day games after the Ashes and I don’t think I’ve ever hit the ball that bad in my life. I was making horrible decisions and just felt horrible at the crease. A bit of a break perhaps isn’t the worst thing,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, Toronto led by Darren Sammy won by six wickets with four balls to go after reaching 231. David Warner will play for the Winnipeg Hawks against the Montreal Tigers on Saturday.
