India’s Under-19 World Cup star Shubman Gill have had some of his most cherished moments in his life over the past three to four months.
The youngster will make his next step in his career when he plays for Kolkata Knight Riders this season.
However, he will need to upgrade his game significantly in the cash-rich league, as he will face some of the best talents in cricket over the next few weeks. But Shubman Gill revealed he was actually sleeping when the auction took place.
The talented batsman was picked up by Kolkata Knight Riders for a whopping ₹1.8 crore. The auction took place during the U-19 World cup.
“I was actually sleeping when people came and told me that I had been picked up by KKR. I was more focused on the U-19 World Cup rather than the auction because the Under-19 World Cup is a once in a lifetime thing,” Shubman Gill said.
The youngster is viewed as a long-term prospect for the club like a Virat Kohli to Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2008. He will have time to learn to ply his trade against the best over the coming years.
However, his leg side playing style was often compared to his idol Virat Kohli by the observers. But the youngster was reluctant to get drawn into comparisons.
“No, actually I don’t try to copy him. When you watch someone then that subconsciously get into your mind. That happens when I try to find gaps and automatically my wrist breaks (like Kohli’s),” he said.
He will face Virat Kohli-led Royal Challengers Bangalore on Sunday in Eden Gardens. It will definitely be the next step in his career.
Shubman Gill, had also been a sensation over the internet after his performances in Under 19 world cup for India. But the young Punjabi batsman reveals he did not change much after the attention he is getting off late.
“I’m not a celebrity or anything. Things have changed a bit. I got a lot of appreciation in my hometown and from my family. But I don’t think it has changed me internally.
“I’m the same person I was 3-4 months ago. I just want to focus on the present and keep working hard on my game. That’s what I did earlier, and that’s what I’m doing now,” he concluded.
