I Would be the First Indian to Score 300 – Virender Sehwag had told VVS Laxman
Virender Sehwag was one of the most confident players in the world. If the ball was there to be hit, he would not have a second thought to smack it. In fact, Virender Sehwag was confident he would become the first Indian batsman to score a triple hundred and eventually he made not only one but two. Virender Sehwag had told the same to VVS Laxman even before he made his Test debut.
Sehwag told Laxman that he has missed out on a golden opportunity when he got out on 281 against Australia in the famous Kolkata Test. The former Indian opener made the claim when he had played only four ODIs. Thus, Laxman didn’t believe Sehwag’s outrageous statements. In fact, Laxman said he didn’t even believe Sehwag will savor success at the topmost level.
Sehwag was always a confident player.
“The night before the Pune match, we had gone out for dinner – Viru, Zak and I. Out of the blue, Viru told me, ‘Laxman bhai, you had a great opportunity to make a triple hundred in the Kolkata Test, but unfortunately you didn’t. Now you wait and watch, I will become the first Indian to score 300 in Test cricket”, VVS Laxman wrote in his autobiography 281 by Westland Sport.
Subsequently, Sehwag went on to score a fine triple hundred in Multan against Pakistan. Furthermore, he scored another triple ton against South Africa.
“After the Multan triple hundred, he came up to me and laughed ‘I told you so, VVS.’ I couldn’t have been happier that my 281 had been surpassed”.
Virender Sehwag always liked to hit the ground running. He didn’t have an ideal footwork, however, his bat flow was fluent which helped him in reaping fruits.
Sehwag always had the confidence under his belt and send shivers down the spine of the world-class bowlers. On the other hand, VVS Laxman and Virender Sehwag shared great memories while playing with each other.
