I Would Have Extended Anil Kumble’s Contract If It Had Extension Clause: Vinod Rai
Vinod Rai, the former chief of the Committee of Administrators (COA), has said that he would have extended Anil Kumble’s contract had it mentioned extension clause but it wasn’t the case. Kumble, who took over as team India’s head coach in 2016, was given a one-year contract. In 2017, he resigned from his post as soon as his contract came to an end.
“Anil Kumble was the best coach available. If his contract had an extension clause, I would have extended it. I have too much respect and regard for Kumble. But since there was no extension clause and since I wasn’t equipped to decide, we fell back on CAC. We inherited the CAC, not created it,” Rai told Hindustan Times.
Rai also said that he had chat with Sachin Tendulkar, a member of Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), the committee which picked Kumble as head coach ahead of Ravi Shastri.
Kumble had resigned from the post due to untenable relation with the Indian skipper Virat Kohli. Under him, India dominated the home season, losing just one out of 13 Tests at home while Men in Blue also made it to the final of ICC Champions Trophy 2017.
Interestingly, Ravi Shastri had not applied for the position in the first go and only threw his hat in the ring after BCCI invited applications again, following Kumble’s resignation.
Right from that day, he was the favourite to take over the post and joined the team’s coaching staff once again, pipping former India opener Virender Sehwag for the top job. Recently, he was given an extension and will continue to hold the position till November 2021.
Kumble, after his stint with the Indian cricket team, took a break from coaching and took up media commitments. He will be making his comeback to coaching soon as Kings XI Punjab have roped him as their Director of Cricket.
It is unlikely that Kumble, India’s highest wicket-taker across formats, will make a comeback to international coaching.
