The recent ball-tampering incident seems to have taught a harsh lesson to the players around the world and former Australian captain Ian Chappell believes that the other players can learn from the trio’s ‘stupidity’.
All the three culprits have been banned by Cricket Australia (CA) with Steven Smith and David Warner being been banned for 12 months, whereas, Cameron Bancroft has been handed a nine-month ban by the national cricket board.
However, after several fans and experts raised a question over the harshness of the punishment imposed by the board, Chappell believes that it was a right decision made by the concerned Board.
Chappell who is currently in India, to witness an Indian Premier League (IPL) match live for the first time also added his views on the extravagant cricket league and said that he keeps a check on the matches by following it on cricket websites.
Chappell said, “You don’t get to see it in Australia on television. I keep up to date with it by following cricket websites.”
Moreover, Ian Chappell is excited to be a part of the IPL as he has enjoyed a 50-year-old relation with India.
He said, “I first came here in 1969 with the Australian team. One of the first things I noticed about the Indian fans was that they were very knowledgeable. They were telling me things about my career that I didn’t know about.”
Chappell also said that without Smith and Warner, India has a golden opportunity to register their maiden series win Down Under.
“I don’t know if India will win comfortably, but they’ll win. It’s certainly India’s best opportunity ever to win a series in Australia. Australia will be still hard to beat because they’ve got a very good bowling attack. The hardest part of the game is to get 20 wickets, and Australia will do that. But they won’t have many runs to play with,” he maintained.
Chappell also said that the decision made by CA was not harsh.
“I think Cricket Australia got it right. CA has done particularly Smith and Warner a huge favour, because you imagine if Smith and Warner were playing next summer in Australia against India, they’re going to get booed at probably all of the Australian grounds. That wouldn’t have been great for CA’s image.”
He concluded by saying that it will be hard for the trio to make a comeback in the side now.
“I’m not sure if CA wants Warner back. Knowing the history of CA pretty well, I think they’ve probably been looking for a reason to get rid of him because he was quite outspoken during the dispute between the players and the administrators last year. So he may not be back. Smith will be back but I don’t think he will captain Australia again,” he concludes.
