ICC Champions Trophy 2017 – 1st Semi Final – England Vs Pakistan – England Predicted XI

Rightfully justifying the tag of favourites, this has by far been England’s most dominant outing ever in any 50-over tournament. The turnaround of this side which took off a couple of years ago has been extremely inspiring and the outfit which once played ODI’s just for the sake of it, are now on the verge of doing something extremely dramatic.

In three games so far, England have decimated their oppositions, twice while chasing and once while defending. The English brand of cricket right now exhibits a sense of freedom, aggression and fearlessness, three vital aspects that are much needed in the modern day form of the game. After knocking their traditional rivals Australia out, the charged up unit will now look to brush aside a relatively easier Pakistan.

Having said that, England needs to be wary of Pakistan’s extreme unpredictability. It would just be the matter of one inspiring spell from a Pakistani bowler to wreck havoc on England and upset a million expectations. Taking a charged up Pakistani outfit could prove to be fatal for England.

Recent form:

Recent form wise, England are super high on confidence, having thrashed Australia at Birmingham. Chasing a moderate 278, England’s top order was rocked early and the side was reduced to a mere 35-3. What happened ahead stunned everyone as Eoin Morgan and Ben Stokes launched an audacious counter-attack, catching Australia off guard. Thanks to Stokes’ ton, England eventually won the game by the DLS method.

Talking Points:

4, 13, 1. As underwhelming as these numbers may seem, they reflect the outings endured by England opener Jason Roy. The Surrey-lad is rated immensely by the pundits around, but time is running out for him. With two gifted batsmen in the form of Jonny Bairstow and Sam Billings warming the benches, another failure for Roy could prove to be a disaster. Or can he come good on the big day and play a knock that just defines him?

Bowling wise, everything looks picture perfect for the hosts. While Liam Plunkett, Jake Ball and Mark Wood have been exceptional, Adil Rashid’s presence adds another dynamic factor. The wrist spinner has been among the wickets regularly and his presence gives the team a colossal advantage in the middle overs. Against a team full of batsmen who generally struggle against wrist spin, Rashid will fancy his chances of picking up a few wickets.

England Predicted XI:

  1. J. Roy 2. A. Hales 3. J. Root 4. E. Morgan (c) 5. B. Stokes 6. J. Buttler (wk) 7. M. Ali 8. A. Rashid 9. L. Plunkett 10. M. Wood 11. L. Plunkett.
