ICC Champions Trophy 2017 Captain’s Corner: Five Tactics Bangladesh Can Use To Beat England

The last couple of years has been a witness to Bangladesh’s metamorphosis from a side that wasn’t too keen on winning to a serious outfit that has defeated some big names. That as far as the game’s promotion from a global view is concerned, has been among the most heartening aspects ever since the 2015 World Cup in Australia concluded. Series after series, Bangladesh have emerged out as a really impressive side and that has been mainly due to the presence of their captain Mashrafe Mortaza.

Making their return to the Champions Trophy for the first time in more than a decade, the Tigers will be upbeat about proving their calibre at the highest stage now in an ICC event. They commence their campaign against hosts England, and the two sides definitely share some history. It was Bangladesh, who ended England’s campaign in the 2015 World Cup, which was the side’s lowest point for a long time.

In order to beat England, Bangladesh will have to be at their best and below we go through five such tactics which might help Bangladesh achieve this.

5. Target out of form England openers:

Jason Roy and Alex Hales, England’s men at the top endured indifferent outings against South Africa in the recently concluded three-match series. The duo found themselves in trouble against the ball moving away in the corridor of uncertainty. Bangladesh can take a cue or two from this and begin attacking right from the very offset. Skipper Mashrafe Mortaza and Mustafizur Rahman are quite handy with the new ball under overcast skies and it will be their duty to provide Bangladesh off to a positive start with the ball. If any of the two openers settle in, Bangladesh will be in for some serious trouble for sure.

4. Don’t let Joe Root bat through:

Bangladesh’s challenges against England’s terrorising battling lineup aren’t just restricted to the openers alone, but the presence of Joe Root at number 3 just compounds that. Root isn’t alien to playing the big knocks and once he is in and settled, chances are high that Root will convert his start into a big score. With 30 scores in excess of 50 in 83 ODI’s innings, Root should be seen as someone extremely dangerous for Bangladesh. This means a score in excess of 50 less than every 3 innings and Root is well on his way to becoming a global superstar. The Tigers must attack the Yorkshire batsman from the beginning and get him as early as possible. No need to mention, if Root gets his eye in, Bangladesh will be starting at a serious score.

3. Use Taskin Ahmed as a genuine wicket taker:

Despite not being the most economical bowlers around, one has to credit the wicket-taking the ability of Taskin Ahmed. The young pacer in his short career so far has struck at some crucial moments for Bangladesh. Some of those crucial moments came against England itself, during that infamous loss for England at Adelaide in the 2015 World Cup which ultimately ended their tournament. Not too long ago as well, during Bangladesh’s victory over England at Dhaka last year in the second ODI of the series, it was Taskin trapping Jos Buttler plumb in front which turned the game in Bangladesh’s favour. Needless to say, skipper Mortaza should rely on Taskin as his wicket-taking the option and be the partnership breaker.

2. Tamim Iqbal must bat through:

Coming into the tournament, Tamim Iqbal has been in some red hot form. He began the warm ups with a scintillating century against Pakistan but then didn’t feature in the side’s second warm-up encounter at the Oval against India. Tamim is a massive pillar of strength for Bangladesh and that is signified by his career average jumping to 45.18 in won games, as opposed to his overall average of 33.43. If Iqbal can bat throughout the innings, he can target the spinners with ease as well, with Adil Rashid turning the ball towards him. More than that, Iqbal batting through also means Sabbir Rahman and Mushfiqur Rahim being able to express themselves freely.

Bangladesh ODI captain feels the side will carry the momentum from the win they attained in the 100th Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo.

1. Treat the game as just another game.

On the psychological front, it wouldn’t be wrong in stating that Bangladesh head into the tournament being seriously intimidated. That was evident when their skipper, Mashrafe Mortaza mentioned that fact that fans shouldn’t expect a lot from the team and the grouping was incredibly hard for Bangladesh. The side needs no such remarks till the tournament lasts as it could be highly demotivating for the young outfit. Rather, Bangladesh needs to approach each and every game with a  fresh mindset and treat the games as regular ODI games, rather than overburdening themselves by making invalid statements.
