ICC Champions Trophy 2017 – Group B Qualification Scenarios

Unlike in Group A, Group B had a result in all of its 4 games. The first 2 were pretty much expected by everyone around. Two of the favourites to win the trophy India and South Africa thrashed their opponents in Pakistan & Sri Lanka and registered comprehensive wins. But this is the beauty of this tournament; each of the 8 teams can beat the other 7 on their day. And that’s exactly what has happened. In the next matches, Pakistan and Sri Lanka came back strong and have registered wins over South Africa and India respectively.

Now it leads to two potential quarterfinals in India versus South Africa and Pakistan against Sri Lanka.  But, there is another team participating in this tournament. The Rain. So what if the Rain washes one of the games or maybe even both? Which sides are going to qualify then?? Here are scenarios possible for Group B.

Scenario 1:-

India vs South Africa washes out and Sri Lanka vs Pakistan has a winner

If India and South Africa’s match gets washed out, then it’s good news for Indian fans. Because India’s NRR is much better than South Africa, we can see India qualifying as a 2nd team and the winner of Pakistan and Sri Lanka as the 1st team.

Scenario 2:-

India v South Africa has a winner and Sri Lanka v Pakistan washes out.

In the case of a wash out in Sri Lanka and Pakistan match, Sri Lanka will be the happier side. The winner of India and South Africa will reach the semis as a 1st team and will be accompanied by Sri Lanka as they have better NRR than Pakistan and they will be facing the toppers of group A in England in the semi-final.

Scenario 3:-

Both Games get washed out

If both games get washed out, then both the title favourites India and South Africa will make it to the semi-finals denying either Pakistan or Sri Lanka a spot because of their impressive NRR. In that case, India will be the topper of Group B and South Africa will go in the semis as a 2nd team to face England in the semis.

Scenario 4:-

Both games have a Winner

In the best possible scenario, that is, no Rain interruptions, India against South Africa and Pakistan versus Sri Lanka have to be treated as Quarter Finals. The winners of the quarter-finals will make it to the semi-finals and the losers go home. Who will finish at the top and who will make it as 2nd will depend on the NRR. The winner of India and South Africa will have a slightly better chance to top the group because of having much better NRR.
