ICC Champions Trophy 2017 To Test Hosts England: Mitchell Starc

Australian fast bowling spearhead Mitchell Starc, who has recovered from the foot injury, is the part of national team’s 15-member squad has opined that it would test the nerves of the hosts after England all-rounder Moeen Ali claimed they are ‘favourites’ for the ICC Champions Trophy which will kick off from June 1st in England and Wales.

“Where in the World Cup you can probably get away with one or two bad performances and still get through to the next round, (with) the Champions Trophy you need to win all three of your round games to get through to the next stage,” Starc was quoted as saying by Cricket.com.au.

With just 15 matches to play in this competition, Starc stated it could bring in more trouble for the hosts while terming them ‘unpredictable’.

“(England) are definitely never a team to take lightly – I think at times you’re not quite sure what you’re going to get with the Poms.

The left-arm pace bowler Starc, who was named as the Player of the Tournament in 2015 World Cup, is raring to go in the upcoming 50-over tournament, as Australia will face off against arch-rivals New Zealand on June 2 in a Group A match at the Edgbaston in Birmingham.

England will open their ICC Champions Trophy campaign against Bangladesh at The Oval on June 1st before taking on New Zealand and Australia. Since 2015 World Cup, England had lost One-day Internationals series against India, Australia and South Africa.

“I think the fact they’ve been playing cricket in England before all the other countries is a plus for them, but at the same time it’s tournament play and the Champions Trophy is a tournament where you can’t have any hiccups along the way,” Starc said.

However, Starc stated that England has an advantage of playing at home and the conditions would help out the team as a unit, as they have the strong unit at the helm.

“They’ve been playing some pretty good cricket against Ireland back home, and the guys in the IPL for the English are playing some good cricket as well,” Starc remarked.

The 27-year-old New South Wales-born Starc believes it is a different event than the bilateral series, as teams are supposed to give their best in their three matches respectively.

With seamer friendly conditions on an offer, Starc would be aiming to give his best alongside Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins and James Pattinson.

“They obviously haven’t done too well in tournaments in the past, but in saying that they’ve got a pretty strong set-up at the minute. “Look, they’re the home country – they’re going to know the conditions better than the rest of the teams,” Starc asserted.

It would be interesting to see how Starc will bowl in England after recovering from the injury before taking on quality side led by Eoin Morgan. Starc has played 65 ODIs for Australia in which he has claimed 129 wickets at an average of 19.88 which included five five-wicket hauls.
