ICC Champions Trophy 2017 – Twitter Hails Kane Williamson After Superb Century
Nov 2, 2023 at 3:49 PM
The ever-reliant Kane Williamson began his ICC Champions Trophy in some style as he amassed an elegant century against Australia at Birmingham to propel New Zealand to a more than a decent total. Electing to bat first on a gloomy morning, Williamson’s openers Martin Guptill and Luke Ronchi set off from the offset as the two were harsh towards Australia’s new ball bowlers. Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood were taken for plenty in their first spell.
Despite a promising beginning, Guptill was dismissed early, but Ronchi carried on and didn’t stop attacking the Aussies. A rain delay in between did halt the proceedings, but once the batsmen resumed, it was the same old story as Ronchi was harsh towards the Pacers.
The star of the day though, was none other than Kane Williamson as he effortlessly piled up a century and was the fly in the ointment for the Aussie quicks. In 97 deliveries, Williamson brought up his century which included three big sixes from his willow. Ross Taylor supported Williamson efficiently with a steady knock of 46, that was eventually ended by John Hastings.
Once Williamson was dismissed however, there was some panic in the Blackcaps setup as the lower middle order just looked to slog their way through. Thanks to a succession of quick wickets from Josh Hazlewood, Australia pulled things back and ensured that New Zealand didn’t run away with the game. Hazlewood eventually ended with a well deserved five wicket haul to ensure that the Kangaroos were right in the game.
Fans on Twitter though, hailed skipper Kane Williamson for his superb knock, and below are some of the tweets.
