ICC Champions Trophy – Captain’s Corner – 5 Tactics England Must Use To Beat Australia

As expected before this tournament commenced, England were rightly termed as the favourites for the title given the dominance asserted by the side in recent times. All those expectations have emerged truly as the Eoin Morgan-led outfit became the first side to qualify for the semi-finals. Before the all-important semi-final though, England will be challenged by the reigning world champions, Australia.

Despite both their games being abandoned by rain, fans have got a clear insight into this Australian side. The bowling has definitely been on the money, but questions remain over the batting. David Warner, who topped the ranking charts not too long ago hasn’t been at his best.

England will be wary of this and would want to ensure that they eliminate their Ashes rivals from the competition. There will be no better feeling than dumping Australia out of the competition for England. Below, we have a look at the five tactics which England must use to beat Australia.

  1. Openers must race off:

A big reason behind England’s new found success in this format has been their exciting opening combination of Alex Hales and Jason Roy. The two like to take off right from the very first delivery and use a lot of muscle in their hits. Roy however, has been enduring a poor run of form of late, struggling to settle down. Despite his highly underwhelming returns, the opener has found immense backing in captain Eoin Morgan. For England to do well against Australia, Roy and Hales need to be on the aggressive front from the very beginning. Countering Australia’s aggression with aggression is England’s best chance.

  1. Joe Root continues to impress:

There is very few batsman around who can make batting look so easy. Root has been a genius in rotating strike and keeping the run rate ticking against the spinners. He showed England the direction against Bangladesh as he finished off the game with a career best score and an unbeaten century. Then against New Zealand too, he led the way with a fine half century which set the base. Root has already been a thorn in Australia’s flesh in the past and would want to carry on his good work.

  1. Dismiss Steven Smith early:

If you ask anyone around who is due for a big score, it will be Steven Smith’s name right at the top. Though Smith often goes unnoticed in between the likes of Warner, Finch and Maxwell, the Australian captain is a big fish indeed. Known to be a big match player, England should get rid of Smith as early as possible. If set, Smith could come down reigning on England and play a match winning knock.

  1. Rashid – Moeen have to win the middle overs battle:

From the bowling front, Adil Rashid has been a sensation for England. Among the leading wicket takers in the format since the last couple of years, Rashid has always been England’s go-to man in the middle overs. His wicket taking ability gives England the edge and the middle overs constitute a significant part of the game. If supported well by the off-spin of Moeen Ali, Rashid can become an even more attacking option for England. Given how Australia’s X Factor Glenn Maxwell has struggled against leg spin, Rashid’s battle with the Big Show will be the one to watch out for.

  1. Jos Buttler finishes it in style:

A big positive which emerged for England in the previous game was their ace finisher Jos Buttler striking form. The devastating batsman was at his best against New Zealand as his late flurry took England past the 300 run mark. During the death overs, Buttler is among the most feared batsmen around with his ability to get unorthodox shots into the equation. Against a side like Australia, Buttler’s finish will hold the aces for England.
