ICC Charges Sri Lanka Analyst Sanath Jayasundra For Trying to Bribe Sports Minister

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has charged a Sri Lanka team advisor, Sanath Jayasundra on Saturday after it was reported that he tried to bribe the country’s sports minister to influence and tinker with the result of a cricket match.

The move against Sanath Jayausundra who is a performance analyst of the national team sought help from Harin Fernando by bribing him. The man himself revealed that a Sri Lanka cricket employee had offered him money to change the Sri Lanka national squad.

“Recently someone tried to bribe me as well,” Fernando said, without mentioning the name who approached him. “I was offered a bribe to get some players into the team. I reported the incident to the ICC.”

ICC stated that Jayasundra had a couple of weeks to respond to the charges which have been levied against him. As per reports, it is learnt that he was accused of “offering a bribe or other reward to the Sri Lankan sports minister to contrive in any way or otherwise influence improperly the result, progress, conduct or any other aspect of an international match.”

Sri Lanka has been under the scrutiny in the recent past for their corrupt charges. Very recently former Sri Lanka Test cricketers Nuwan Zoysa and Avishka Gunawardene were charged for match-fixing and has been given a couple of weeks to respond. The charges which have been levied against him relates to a T10 League which will be played at the United Arab Emirates in December. The revelation was made by the ICC.

Meanwhile, it was back un February, the ICC banned former Sri Lanka great Sanath Jayasuriya and also a former chief for a couple of years. The southpaw neither cooperated and an anti-corruption investigation.

Sr Lanka has been hit with a series of match-fixing controversies in recent months. In February, the ICC banned former skipper and ex-chief selector Sanath Jayasuriya from the game for two years for failing to cooperate with an anti-corruption investigation.

Last month, ex-Sri Lanka fast bowler Dilhara Lokuhettige was suspended over three match corruption accusations. And last year, a match-fixing controversy blew up over a sting operation carried out for a TV documentary. Harin Fernando further revealed that in December, Sri Lanka had been rated as the most corrupt nation by the ICC.
