ICC Cricket World Cup 2019: Depth in Our Bowling Makes Us Favourites Feels Chris Woakes
English fast bowling all-rounder Chris Woakes believes that England’s depth in the bowling attack will be vital for their chances in the 2019 World Cup. England who is currently the No 1 ranked side in the 50 overs format has played a terrific brand of cricket in the last 3 to 4 years. Hence Eoin Morgan’s men have been considered as one of the hot contenders for the tournament. Chris Woakes who is one of the core group of bowlers is expected to play an important role for England in the quadrennial event.
England have a great batting line-up
Woakes is of the opinion that the English batting line-up is up there with the best in the world. He feels that batting is their strength but was satisfied with the fact that England has produced some good performances with the ball too in the last few years. In his column in the Sky Sports, Woakes revealed what it takes for England to win their first World Cup title.
“A lot is spoken about our batting given the strength we have with the bat, it’s up there with the best in the world, we realise that is one of our strengths but I think we’ve done some really good stuff with the ball over the last few years as well,” the allrounder wrote in his column for Sky Sports.
“Sometimes that goes unnoticed because of how good we are with the bat. It’s great to see some of the guys putting their hand up, it’s not in the ODI format but whenever you get an opportunity, it’s good to put in strong performances and show everybody what you can do – the guys who have been out in the Caribbean for the T20s have certainly done that.
Chris Woakes backs England to perform admirably in the 2019 World Cup
England got a reality check in the ODI series against the Windies. After being held 2-2 in the 5 match ODI series, they completed a 3-0 clean sweep in the T20I series. Fast bowler Chris Jordan was the Man of the Series for bagging 6 wickets including a career-best 4/6 in the 2nd game. Left-arm pacer David Willey also achieved his best bowling in T20I’s when he finished with figures of 4/7 in the final match to help England complete a 3-0 clean sweep.
Following England’s victory in the 1st T20I, Eoin Morgan showered praise on leg-spinner Adil Rashid who finished with figures of 1/15 in 4 overs. He further lauded Chris Jordan for bagging a couple of wickets for 16 runs in his 3 overs. Rashid also bowled well and finished with 2/12 in the 2nd and series-clinching T20I. Meanwhile all-rounder Tom Curran also looked lethal and finished with figures of 4/36 in the opening encounter.
“We’ve been a really strong unit since the last World Cup, so hopefully we can maintain that and I’m desperate to be a part of that,” said Woakes. “I’m not alone in that, of course, and a few of the guys in the T20 squad really pushed their cases in the series against the Windies. I think it’s great for the bowling unit to see the depth we have.
