ICC Not In Hurry, Giles Clarke Hopeful To See International Cricket Returning In Pakistan 1

Giles Clarke, the International Cricket Council (ICC), Task Force Committee Head and England and Wales Cricket Board President (ECB), who is on a two-day tour to Pakistan to take the stock of the situation for cricket, has expressed the revival of international cricket in Pakistan will take some time as the governing body is not showing any urgency, but was impressed with the arrangements put in place by Pakistan authorities following his visit.

“We know it’s important Pakistan play at home but we also know that we don’t want to get it wrong,” Clarke told media in Lahore.

The security issues in the past turned out as an obstruction for international teams after Sri Lankan team bus was attacked in Lahore in March 2009, and there on, Pakistan did not host a Test.

“I am personally impressed with security arrangements. We have seen wonderful steps taken with regard to law and order in Lahore,” Clarke revealed.

Clarke briefed the media gathering in Lahore on Saturday alongside Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Shahryar Khan after meeting Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif including Executive Committee Chairman Najam Sethi.

“We are looking to establish a solid and reliable base upon which international bilateral cricket at all levels can return on a regular basis to Pakistan. I talked to the Punjab CM. I am hopeful for the return of international cricket in Pakistan,” Clarke said.

However, Clarke expects to see international cricket returning in Pakistan as Shehbaz Sharif also assured him the government will provide foolproof security arrangements for visitors to host international matches.

“We will provide foolproof security for foreign players so that international cricket can return to Pakistan”, Punjab CM Shehbaz Sharif said.

In 2015, Pakistan hosted a limited-overs series (two T20Is and three ODIs) against Zimbabwe which was lauded by Clarke.

“Zimbabwe did a great job in coming to Pakistan and it was well organised and we wanted to build on that last year but a terrible incident happened in a Lahore park which derailed those efforts,” Giles added.

Earlier this month, after mulling to tour Pakistan, West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) refused the offer to play two T20Is in March this year citing security reasons.

“This isn’t an easy road. But you have to remember that an international team was actually attacked,” Clarke CONCLUDED.
