The Indian women’s team might not have won the World Cup, but the side can look back at the tournament with extremely fond memories. In the lead up to the tournament, not many gave the side a chance, given the fact that India had to participate in the qualifiers to secure their berth. Nevertheless, as the tournament went on, the Mithali Raj led unit went on to churn out some memorable displays, before ultimately finishing as the runners up, to hosts England.
A true champion that emerged for the Indian eves in this competition, was none other than the Punjab dynamite, Harmanpreet Kaur. Having played in the women’s Big Bash League and with a ton of experience under her belt, the batter demolished Australia in the semi final with an epic knock of 171 not out.
Her performance was so clinical that back home in India, the Chief Minister of Punjab, even offered her a position in the police department of the state. Another delightful aspect awaits her now, and that is the delightful treat from her family in the form of “bhindi ki sabzi” (lady finger).
Soon after the final, her family spoke about the batter’s affection for the certain delicacy.
“My daughter likes homemade food. She has a great liking for bhindi ki sabzi and also dishes made from boiled potato,” said her mother.
Skipper Mithali Raj looked back at the tournament with fond memories and said, “As a captain, I am very proud. I have seen the changes the girls have made. I’ve seen the transition. The team still looks very confident they will be a team that other teams will be looking out for. That’s what I’m proud of. We started off well. We had a few matches in which we were defeated and we came back stronger. Unlike 2005, this went to the end. The girls gave their best.”
