It was a tale of so near yet so far for the Indian eves, as England held their nerves in an absolute thriller of a game. India, having won millions of fans across the globe with their style of play in this tournament, had the ideal opportunity to create history and clinch their maiden silverware.
However, the Mithali Raj led outfit was outplayed minutely by a relatively better side on the day, and more importantly, a side which sealed the pressure moments when it mattered the most.
The game though, for a majority portion stood in India’s favour as the side had the chase in control till Harmanpreet Kaur got out. Opener Punam Raut’s brilliant half century went in vain as England held their nerves to win by just one run.
Indian skipper Mithali Raj looked upon this tournament as a proud moment for the team as a whole.
“It wasn’t easy for England but credit to them for holding their nerve,” said Raj. “They did well in those crunch moments which turned the game. I want to tell my girls that I am very proud of them. They didn’t make it easy for any of the teams. I would also like to thank the crowds for coming up in large numbers to support women’s cricket. Jhulan is a class bowler, she has shown it a number of times.”
“The batting was a little inexperienced and they couldn’t hold their nerve in the end overs. I am sure this experience will help the batters. I do see myself playing for a couple of years but I don’t see myself playing another world cup. Jhulan has had an excellent career, very long and inspirational for young cricketers. I am sure people at home would now look up to women cricketers,” Raj added.
