Riding on captain Mithali Raj’s brilliant century and Rajeshwari Gayakwad’s five-wicket haul, India’s women team stormed into the semifinal of the ongoing ICC Women’s World Cup with a thumping 186 runs against New Zealand.
Batting first, India posted 265 for 7 in the allotted 50 overs with. Raj top-scored for her team, scoring 109 while Harmanpreet Kaur scored 60 before Veda Krishnamurthy 45-ball 70 helped the team to post a challenging total. In reply, New Zealand never stood a chance to chase down the total, losing wickets at regular intervals with only Amy Satterthwaite crossing the 20-run mark.
New Zealand went off to a poor start with their skipper Suzie Bates being dismissed by Shikha Pandey for just 1. Soon, the batting side found itself reeling at 27 for 3 before a 24-run stand between Satterthwaite and Sophie Devine stopped the rot for a while. However, once the latter was sent back by Rajeshwari Gayakwad, the flood gates opened as the Suzie Bates-led side lost its last 7 wickets for just 28 runs to get wrapped up for just 79. Rajeshwari Gayakwad starred with the ball, taking 5 for 15 while Deepti Sharma picked up a couple of wickets for 26 runs.
