ICC World Cup 2019: Ben Stokes to Receive Knighthood for his World Cup Heroics
Following a brilliant unbeaten 84-run knock off 98 balls, England all-rounder is being touted to be knighted following a special knock at Lord’s in the thrilling finale.
Recently, Eoin Morgan-led side had met outgoing UK minister Theresa May, who had praised efforts of their team following the maiden title victory on Sunday (July 14).
However, her contenders Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt stated that they would give Durham-star a knighthood.
Thus, if it had happened in time, the 26-year-old southpaw will be known as ‘Sir Ben Stokes’. The contenders of the prime minister’s role had revealed in their debate on Monday (July 15).
Moreover, English media quoted Johnson, who is said to be leading from the front for PM’s role. He was asked if he would be elected as a PM would he give a knighthood to Stokes.
In response, Johnson agreed upon the question by saying he will give ‘dukedoms’.
Sir Ben Stokes on cards:
While speaking to The Sun and TalkRadio, Johnson had succinctly responded during the round-fire round following the leadership debate.
“I will give dukedoms, whatever – I will go to the maximum, to, what, the Garter King of Arms. Yes is the answer, absolutely,” British media has quoted Johnson.
Earlier, post-Alastair Cook’s retirement, he had been knighted for rendering his services to England cricket. Cook had also served as a Test and ODI leader of the Three Lions team.
From the villain to hero:
Stokes, who had a nightmare during the 2016 T20 World Cup finale against Windies at Eden Gardens in Kolkata further found himself in hot waters for the Bristol brawl. Later on, he also missed the Ashes campaign before scripting glory in 2019 for England.
Stokes had been third leading run-getter for England at the twelfth edition of the World Cup. He has garnered 465 runs in 10 matches at an average of 66.43.
Also, in 11 matches, Stokes had snared seven wickets after conceding 246 runs off 305 deliveries.
Meanwhile, he is gearing up for the Ashes campaign which will get underway at Edgbaston in Birmingham.
