ICC World Cup 2019: Brett Lee Picks His Top 3 Bowlers for the Showpiece Event
We are less than a week away from the start of the 12th edition of the 50 overs World Cup and all the 10 participating teams are hoping to hold aloft the trophy at the iconic Lord’s Stadium on 14th July. Hosts England and India will go into the tournament as two favourites. They have played some sensational cricket in the recent past and hence they are the top two sides in the Latest ICC ODI Rankings for teams.
India has several superstars in their line-up. They are highly reliant on their top three of Rohit Sharma Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli who has scored the bulk of the runs for them in the last two years. There has been some issues with the middle order. However, with the presence of MS Dhoni, India should look to recover if they lose a few wickets early. All in all, India have a very strong side and has the ability to lift their 3rd World Cup title.
Former Australia speedster Brett Lee who was part of the World Cup winning squad for Australia in 2003 and 2007 picked his top 3 fast bowlers of the tournament. Jasprit Bumrah, the spearhead of India’s pace attack definitely found a place in the top 3. He heaped praises on the speedster who has been quoted sensational in every format he has played so far.
“What a wonderful bowler,” Brett Lee said of Bumrah. The No 1 ODI bowler in the world has bagged a total of 85 wickets in his 49 ODI matches. “He’s got a good record, wonderful yorker, good pace,” added Brett Lee.
Barring Jasprit Bumrah, Brett Lee also picked Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins of Australia as the two other fast bowlers who should do well in the showpiece event. Mitchell Starc was the pick of the bowlers for Australia in the 2015 World Cup and also bagged the Man of the series award for his exploits with the ball all through the tournament.
“You’d have to stick with Mitchell Starc,” Brett Lee was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au. Mitchell Starc had been out of action for a long time. He sustained a chest injury in February. However, he is nearing full fitness and has got the quality left in him to become the X factor for Australia yet again in a big event.
Meanwhile, Brett Lee was also very impressed with Pat Cummins who has also been an impressive performer for Australia. In the absence of Starc, it was Cummins who spearheaded the bowling attack for Australia. “Pat Cummins: pace, accuracy, variations. He can do it all,” Brett Lee said. Cummins bagged 17 wickets in the 2015 World Cup at a staggering average of 14 per wicket.
