The most intriguing aspect of the ICC World Cup 2019 squad was the second wicket-keeper role in the team. There was a stiff competition between Rishabh Pant and Dinesh Karthik for the second wicketkeeper, however, in the end, it was Dinesh Karthik, who got the nod to travel England.
Speaking of the selection, MSK Prasad revealed that the wicket-keeping quality of Karthik has picked himself above Rishabh Pant, who is still work in progress. He also confirmed that Dinesh will get the chance if MS Dhoni gets injured or the team is desperate to give him a rest.
We should have invested in the future – Tarak Sinha
Speaking of the selection, the childhood coach of Rishabh Pant quoted that he was pretty much disappointed with the call from selectors. He feels that they should have invested in the young talent rather than going for someone, who hardly got a few years left in his career.
He also criticised the selectors for not giving enough chances to Rishabh Pant before judging his calibre on the field. He doesn’t think that Karthik is a better player than Pant as well.
“They are taking a second wicketkeeper because of experience. He will play only in case of an emergency. I feel they [selectors] should have preferred a youngster. Karthik, 33 and Dhoni, 37, are around the same age. For how long will Karthik play after Dhoni retires? It’s not that Karthik plays better than Pant. Rishabh has got chances on and off. He has not got enough chances in one-dayers. When you get more chances, it is fair to expect more. We should have invested in the future and not take a backward step,” he said.
Rishabh Pant has got an age on his side:
However, the Tarak Sinha is sure that he is going to work with Rishabh Pant in order to grab a chance for him in the upcoming games. Sinha is sure that Pant’s chance will come, as he got quite a few years on his side.
“These were the same selectors, who had picked Rishabh to keep wicket and today if they are thinking like this, it is difficult to understand or say anything. I am disappointed, but Rishabh and I will work harder. “Rishabh has got age on his side. I am sure he will get many chances in the future,” Sinha told mid-day yesterday.
On Monday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India announced their squad for the upcoming ICC World Cup 2019. As expected, there are quite a few surprising names on the chart. Vijay Shankar is another interesting selection, who got the nod ahead of a regular player Ambat Rayudu.
