ICC World Cup 2019: Former Pakistan Players Urges Sarfaraz Ahmed to Bat Up the Order in the Quadrennial Event
Former Pakistan players have come down hard at Pakistan skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed and have asked him to bat up the order to provide solidity to the middle order. Sarfaraz Ahmed has wasted his batting talent in the past by coming way down in the batting order. In addition, he is not a player who can literally toy with a bowling line-up. Hence Sarfaraz batting up the order will be better suited for Pakistan in the 2019 World Cup.
“Sarfaraz does not have the big shots to justify his batting at number 5, 6 or 7. He needs to bat higher up so that he can build his innings and help Pakistan get big totals,” former captain Shahid Afridi said.
“He is wasting himself coming lower than four and this doesn’t help the team. If Pakistan is to do well in the World Cup, Sarfaraz has a big role to play as captain and player. He has to be a leader on and off the field,” he added.
Meanwhile, Pakistan’s most successful Test captain also stated that Sarfaraz must realize his worth in the team and should be batting at No 4 or 5. “He has to realise that his worth for the team is at number four or five. He is the sort of player who can change the momentum of the game with his rotation of strike and ability to keep the scoreboard moving,” Pakistan’s most successful Test captain Misbah-ul-Haq was quoted as saying by Times of India.
The batting position of Sarfaraz Ahmed has come under the scanner on a few occasions in the past as well. He has batted lower down in the order for the majority of his career. However, he decided to come up the order in the ODI series against England a few times. He returned to his usual No 6 position during the warm-up clash against Afghanistan which Pakistan went onto lose by 3 wickets.
Meanwhile, former Pakistan skipper Moeen Khan revealed that he had suggested Sarfaraz to think of even opening the innings as the team needs him for the major part of the tournament. “In the last World Cup I was the chief selector and I tried him out as an opener and he did well. He is someone who needs overs to pace his innings,” he said.
A captain has to lead by example and if he comes at number four, the other batsmen will also respond and play sensibly,” Test wicketkeeper-batsman Kamran Akmal said.
He has to marshal the innings and he has to play the team he wants not the eleven the chief selector and the head coach wants. Only then will he be able to do well in the World Cup,” he further added
