Former Indian off spinner Harbhajan Singh has backed MS Dhoni to play at No.4 in ICC World Cup 2019. Although, India are considered favorites to win the mega event this summer, No.4 remains their weakness.

The team management had tried at least a dozen players over the last 4 years. But they still could not find an optimal batsman for the slot. Ambati Rayudu looked like a viable solution for sometime, but his huge dip of form got him axed from the World Cup squad.

The No.4 position is one of the most important places to bat in an ODI match. The player will have the responsibility to lead the entire middle order and needs lot of experience. India could not find a good player at that position since Yuvraj Singh in 2011. Despite having plethora of batting talent across the country, India lacks a proper batsman for the position.

MS Dhoni My Favorite For No.4- Harbhajan

Harbhajan Singh had played three ODI world cups for India. He was an integral player in all three editions and had a wealth of experience. The veteran off spinner believes that Dhoni could be the best player for the player. Although, he is not completely against KL Rahul for No.4, Harbhajan thinks Vijay Shankar does not have the experience.

Both KL Rahul and MS Dhoni played a major knocks against Bangladesh in the warm up game heading into the tournament. Also, both were in tremendous form in the recently concluded IPL 2019. Coming at No.4, Rahul played a wonderful knock and scored a hundred. On the other hand, MS Dhoni came at No.6 and made his way to a century with utmost ease.

“I don’t want Vijay Shankar, KL Rahul might be a better no.4 as he’s got a variety of strokes under his belt. And the best thing about watching him bat is when he hits the ball and how his head stays still and focused on the ball. He played so many shots against Bangladesh but you won’t have seen his head wobble a single time,” Harbhajan said.

“But if you ask me who my favourite no.4, who would be? I will say its probably MS Dhoni. The wicketkeeper-batsman has been playing at number six-seven for team India as a finisher under a lot of pressure. Now he should be brought up the pecking order as he has the ability and the experience to come in and hit a six and attack any bowler.”

Dhoni Needed At Lower Order

The top order for India are in good form. Considering their previous performances in England during Champions Trophy 2013, 2017, Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan are expected to open the innings.

Although Virat Kohli contemplated on playing at No.4, it is made clear during warm up games, that he will play at 3. Once again the conundrum will be for No.4 heading into a major event. Even though Dhoni is an excellent option at No.4, his experience could be more useful for the team at lower order. His incredible ability to read the game and stitch partnerships with tail cannot be missed.

No other player can handle the pressure and deliver during the end overs with the tailenders like MS Dhoni does. Meanwhile, we cannot waste a talent like KL Rahul in lower order as well. So lets see what Virat Kohli thinks on this as India are set to play their first game on June 5.
