ICC World Cup 2019: India Should Be Flexible with No 4 Spot Opines Virender Sehwag

Arguably the most destructive batsman of all time, Virender Sehwag has stated that Team India needs to flexible with their No 4 slot in the upcoming 2019 World Cup which is slated to be played from 30th May to 14th July in England and Wales. The Men in Blue hasn’t managed to solve their issues with the No 4 spot.

Despite Ambati Rayudu playing most of the series prior to the World Cup as a No 4 batsman, he was overlooked and MSK Prasad clarified that they were looking at Vijay Shankar to play the role of the No 4 batsman.

Virender Sehwag further stated that as the No 4 spot hasn’t been cemented by any particular player, it is important for the top 3 Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli to get them off to good starts and at least one should get that elusive big knock.

There is certainly no doubt about the fact that India will go into the tournament as one of the firm favourites of the tournament. One of the very few issues with the Indian limited-overs team has been the problem surrounding the No 4 batting slot. Despite asking quite a few players to bat at that position, none has managed to grab their opportunity which hasn’t allowed India to solve the problem.

During an exclusive interview with the Times of India, Virender Sehwag revealed that India needs to flexible with the No 4 slot depending upon the situation of the match.

“The team will decide according to the situation. In the initial games, Vijay Shankar may bat there. But the team will be flexible. If we are thinking of winning the Cup, we should not be obsessed with such those things. Anybody in the middle-order should be ready to bat between No. 4, 5 and 6. But one of Rohit, Shikhar and Virat has to bat for a longer duration. Someone should drop anchor from one end,” Virender Sehwag was quoted as saying by TOI.

Speaking on the 15 member India squad who is expected to travel to the World Cup, Virender Sehwag stated that now with the team being selected we need to back Kohli and Co. He feels that unless India makes mistakes through the tournament, they are expected to win the tournament.

“Now that the team has been selected, we should back captain Virat Kohli and his boys. Let us all pray and wish well for the team. Unless we make mistakes, we will win. There is enough depth in the team.”

With the English conditions expected to be quite different to that of India, Sehwag feels that the Indian players have played enough cricket there to get adjusted to the conditions. India played a full-length series in England last year.

“I think our boys have played enough cricket in English conditions. They know their responsibilities. A champion team will not bother about batting first or second. The team should always start with a positive approach. There should not be any negativity,” Virender Sehwag signed off.
