ICC World Cup 2019: Inzamam-ul-Haq Feels Pakistan Can Break the Losing Jinx Against India

Former Pakistan great and currently the chief selector of Pakistan cricket team, Inmazam-ul-Haq is optimistic of the fact that the Men in Green can break their 6 match losing streak in 50 overs World Cup when they take on India in a group league match in the ICC World Cup on 16th June.

Pakistan who won the World Cup in 1992 hasn’t managed to beat India in any of the 6 matches they have played in the tournament so far. However, despite 6 defeats against India, Inzamam feels that Pakistan can break their jinx and win the match against Pakistan.

“People take an Indo-Pak match very seriously and some even go on to say that ‘we will be happy even if only we can win against India during the World Cup’,” said Inzamam.”I’m hopeful that we will end our losing streak against India in World Cup matches,” he further added.

Inzamam who played 120 Tests for Pakistan stated that the World Cup is not only about the match against India, Pakistan also has the ability to beat other top sides. Pakistan has suffered 10 consecutive ODI defeats and was further defeated by Afghanistan in the World Cup warm-up clash. Inzamam-ul-Haq received stern criticism after changing the World Cup squad. He spoke about the difficulties which he goes through in selecting a national team for the World Cup.

“People think it is easy to jot down 14-15 players in order to form a squad but it’s nothing like that because there is a lot of pressure. For example, it was very difficult for us to select fast-bowlers for the World Cup because there were a lot of good names around including the likes of (Mohammad) Amir, Junaid (Khan) and (Usman Khan) Shinwari,” said the 49-year-old.

“Like I said before pace of Hasnain, who can touch 150 kph, would add a new dimension to our bowling attack because the rest of the bowlers penetrate only around the 130-140 kph mark.”

Meanwhile, Inzamam-ul-Haq stated that not a single team in the tournament should be taken lightly as all the teams have the ability to beat all other 9 teams.

“I think we should not take any team lightly during the World Cup. Teams like Afghanistan can upset some of the bigger teams. Even if you play, for instance, against Afghanistan or England, you get the same value with two points.”

The former Pakistan skipper further added that it is very important to get off to a good start in the showpiece event. “Getting off to a good start is important and I think our team has the ability to do that.”

Inzamam-ul-Haq feels that India, New Zealand, England and Pakistan will be the four semi-finalists for the quadrennial event. “I think England, as they are the number one side in the world, India, because of the balance of their side, New Zealand, as they have played good cricket in the build up to the event, and of course Pakistan will be my final four,” he said.
