ICC World Cup 2019: Joe Root Firm to Give Best Against Australia in Semis

England top-order batsman Joe Root conceded that they will try their best to prepare themselves ahead of their semi-final clash of the ongoing ICC World Cup 2019 against reigning champions, Australia on July 11 (Wednesday).

In the second semis, hosts England will take on Aaron Finch-led side at Edgbaston in Birmingham.

In between, Australian senior off-spinner Nathan Lyon, who just featured in three World Cup matches, has reiterated that it’s England’s World Cup to ‘lose’. He has bagged three wickets for the Kangaroos so far in this World Cup edition.

Furthermore, Root had made it clear that such comments won’t distract when the heavyweights meet in the marquee clash.

Earlier, in the league stage fixtures, Australia had thump 64 runs.

“Nathan has a lot to say, a lot of the time, so you just take it with a pinch of salt,” AFP quoted Root as saying.

While also speaking about Lyon’s comments, Root asserted that it is likely a way to take off the pressure. He further reiterated that he doesn’t like to get involved in such stuff. He also added that there had been times when players exchanged words on the field.

“It might be a way of taking the pressure off himself and his team. I try not to get too involved, to be honest. I think there have been times within games when it has got a bit spicy and there have been a few exchanges on the field,” Root said.

Interestingly, Root has personally been involved in an altercation during the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy with Edgbaston. He remarked that they prefer to go in their own way ahead of the 2019 World Cup semi-final in Birmingham.

“But generally we will go about things in our own way and just get ourselves ready as best we can,” Root added.

To talk about the Three Lions ODI performance, they have won 10 matches out of last 12 ODIs. Meanwhile, with Australia eying for their sixth World Cup title, England is keen to lay hands on their maiden World Cup trophy.

In 1992, England had lost to Pakistan in the finale.

Meanwhile, Kangaroos are yet to lose their World Cup semi-final. Root reiterated that Australia had done the outstanding job in the World Cup events. But, of late, England had a sound record against the top-notch side.

“They have got a lot of success in the bank. We will be drawing on that confidence that over a long period of time now we have been successful against Australia and we should take that into Thursday. It’s a great chance and a great week, it does feel special,” Root concluded.

Root, who also has two wickets to his name, is the leading run-scorer for England with 500 runs in nine matches. Root has accumulated runs at an average of 62.50 with his strike-rate of 91.74.
