ICC World Cup 2019: KL Rahul Happy to Open for India; Communication Impresses Rohit Sharma

With communication playing a quintessential role when it comes to players defining their respective role and the good communicators further play a major part for the successful campaigns of their respective teams. Similarly, Team India’s vice-captain Rohit Sharma alongside Shikhar Dhawan led to one of the finest examples in the cricketing world. Now, KL Rahul is partnering Rohit to open the innings as he has already expressed delight to face the first ball in the ongoing ICC World Cup 2019.

Meanwhile, Rohit is keen to develop the same kind of understanding with Rahul. Besides, India has five games still left to play with at the league stage games of the ODI showpiece.

Apart from a couple of hiccups, Rohit-Rahul has backed each other during a high-profile clash in Manchester on June 16. The duo posted 136-run stand against Pakistan.

Rahul, who’s happy to bat alongside Rohit, has also praised the regular opening duo for their strong show.

“Obviously Shikhar and Rohit for the last three or four years have been such a dangerous combination having done so well. They have owned those positions. I had to wait for my chance. And, I am just happy that I got to bat in the top of the order,” Rahul told reporters in England.

The right-handed batsman Rohit revealed they’re building upon their communication at the quadrennial event. Somewhat, Rohit has expressed satisfaction regarding his partnership with Rahul at the top for 23.5 overs against Sarfraz Ahmed-led side at the Old Trafford.

“But we had a lot of communication (during a game against Pakistan) while we were batting, so slowly we will build on it. Now, that I know he’s going to open for the next few games as well. “So that conversation between us is really, really important. And, I hope that continues because it’s going to only help both of us,” Rohit added.

The forced change came after Dhawan injured his left thumb after receiving a vicious delivery of Pat Cummins during India–Australia clash at The Oval on June 9.

However, Dhawan despite writhing in pain slammed a memorable hundred to relish in his ‘Gabbar’ style.

Interestingly, Rohit has allowed Rahul to face the first ball of India’s innings against Pakistan. However, he has often faced the first ball in the presence of Dhawan.

“Yeah, KL also likes to take the strike. And for me, it was important to give him that. Because just like me, he also has the mindset of taking the first ball. That is his comfort. He is playing his first game as an opener here. So, I wanted to make sure that he’s comfortable,” Rohit told reporters.

Rohit and Rahul will begin the innings against Afghanistan on Saturday (June 22).
