ICC World Cup 2019: Mohammed Shami Credits MS Dhoni for his Hat-Trick Against Afghanistan
On his return, Mohammed Shami has been outstanding with the ball, who further claimed a hat-trick against Afghanistan in a thriller of the game on Saturday (June 22) in Southampton. Shami has made up his mind to bowl a yorker in a bid to claim a hat-trick against Afghanistan. Thus, Shami has equally credited MS Dhoni for suggesting him to bowl a yorker.
Thus Shami’s remarkable spells helped him to help India to beat Gulbadin Naib-led Afghanistan by 11 runs.
Shami has become overall second Indian bowler to claim a hat-trick after Chetan Sharma’s achieved this milestone in 1987 against New Zealand. With this milestone, it’s the tenth hat-trick in the history of the quadrennial event.
While bowling the final over of Afghanistan’s innings, Shami conceded just four runs after bowling his heart out. He conceded 40 runs while claiming as many as four wickets.
Indian bowlers execute to perfection:
While executing his plan to perfection, Shami had further backed himself when there was a no margin for errors or so.
“There was no time to think. You have to back your own skills as you don’t have much option otherwise. If you try more variations, the chances of going for runs is more. My thought was to execute my plan rather than trying to read batsman’s mind,” PTI quoted Shami as saying.
The 29-year-old Shami revealed he had only thought about bowling yorkers and Dhoni has advised him for the same. He added he did precisely what Dhoni suggested him to do.
“The plan was simple. To bowl, a yorker and even Mahi bhai suggested that. He said, ‘Don’t change anything now as you have a great chance of getting a hat-trick. It’s a rare opportunity and you need to do the same thing. So I did what exactly I was told,” Shami told reporters in Southampton.
On the penultimate delivery of Afghan innings, Shami had cleaned up Mujeeb Ur Rahman when the ball smashed into leg stump. After conceding a boundary on his very first ball of the over to see Afghanistan taking down the equation to 12 off five, Shami saw Mohammad Nabi denying a single before miscued shot saw Hardik Pandya claiming a simple catch at the long-on region.
On his very next delivery, Shami rattled’s Aftab Alam’s furniture by bowling a fullish and straight delivery.
In between, Dhoni walked up to Shami and suggested him for a searing yorker and without any second thought, Shami bowled an unplayable delivery to Rahman before relishing in joy.
Shami considered himself lucky on being introduced in the playing XI. The opportunity came following Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s hamstring injury which he picked during a Pakistan game in Manchester on June 16. Shami also expressed delight in claiming a hat-trick.
”Getting a chance in the playing XI is a bit of luck. I was ready that whenever I get a chance, I will have to utilise it. As far as hat-trick is
concerned, it is a rarity at least in the World Cup. I am happy,” Shami said.
India backed themselves to strength:
As India has shown intent apart from a rare slow-show in the batting, Shami admitted the fact that their gameplan was to make good use of short pitch deliveries which is subsequently seen as a weapon. He expressed satisfaction by not exposing themselves to a batsman like Nabi, who could have used it as a plus.
“We didn’t bowl fuller length deliveries as it was coming onto the bat well. We knew they would be circumspect against short balls. Our gameplan was simple, bowl bouncers from varying lengths. There was a point when Nabi’s flow was irritating but it’s better if you don’t show your concern or irritation which the batsman would have gauged,” Shami further said.
Shami has been following a routine practice, and he’s keen to continue his good show for Team India.
