ICC World Cup 2019: MS Dhoni’s Brain Will be the X Factor for India in the Quadrennial Event Says Zaheer Abbas
Former Pakistan stylish batsman Zaheer Abbas feels that the brain of former Team India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni will be the trump card for the Men in Blue in the World Cup 2019 which is slated to start in England and Wales from 30th May with the final slated to be played on 14th July at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground.
It was under the leadership of Mahendra Singh Dhoni that India lifted the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007 which was the first assignment of Dhoni as the skipper of the side. He was also the captain of India when they lifted the 50 overs World Cup back in 2011. Meanwhile, Dhoni was also the Indian skipper when Indian won the Asia Cup in 2010 and 2013. Under him, India also won the Champions Trophy in 2013.
He is a terrific wicket-keeper as well and is undoubtedly the best behind the stumps. He has also been in a sensational form with the bat in the last few months which will definitely keep him in good stead going into the tournament. Zaheer Abbas feels that although Dhoni’s image of being the best finisher has taken a dig, the experience of the former skipper will come in handy during the World Cup and his experience will count a lot.
“India has a genius called Mahendra Singh Dhoni in the team. He is the brain of cricket in the team. He understands the game so well and has experience of leading India in two WC wins. His experience will be vital for captain and coach and he can be their trump card,” Zaheer Abbas was quoted by PTI Bhasha.
“Also, it is the first WC under Virat Kohli‘s captaincy and he would be eager to prove his mettle as a captain. Meanwhile, the former Pakistan batter feels that the pitches in England will suit the strong Indian batting line-up. He went a step ahead and stated that even a score of 400 to 450 might be possible during the tournament.
“We have seen that in the recently-concluded Pakistan–England series, that over 300 runs were scored and chased. Now in the World Cup, 450 runs could be a possibility as there is no grass on the wickets and bowlers will get little help from the conditions,” said Zaheer Abbas.
“In such a scenario, India will benefit as they have one of the strongest batting line ups. English wickets are now batsmen’s paradise,” he said. Meanwhile, Zaheer Abbas also feels that it is always a captain’s decision to decide which players he wants to send in at No 4 for the showpiece event.
In the last few months, the main area of concern for India has been this spot and they go into the World Cup without having known the actual No 4 for the tournament. “It is purely captain’s decision but my view is that top four batting order shouldn’t be changed frequently. You can make changes in the lower middle order but not at the top,” said Zaheer Abbas.
