ICC World Cup 2019: Rahul Dravid Reckons Bowlers Will Help India’s Cause in Middle-Overs in the UK

Rahul Dravid – the India A and Under-19 coach believe India has its bases covered for the upcoming ICC World Cup 2019. The Virat Kohli-led side will begin their World Cup campaign on June 5 in Southampton taking on South Africa. Meanwhile, the veteran cricketer believes the Men in Blue bowlers have done a fair job in the recent past. He reckons the bowling will play a pivotal role in English conditions.

“Bowling is going to play a very big role in this World Cup and the team that bowls best, probably will be closer to winning it,” ToI quoted Dravid, as saying.

The prominent figure in Indian set-up Dravid believes it’s going to be high-scoring games during the twelfth edition of the World Cup.

The former skipper for India, Dravid has been with India A in England in 2018 which further saw him conceding that the surface would be true for the batting.

“In a World Cup, I believe, having experienced some of the conditions in England last year with the A tour, it would be a high scoring World Cup,” Dravid said.

The 46-year-old Dravid believes India bowlers are capable of eking out wickets in the middle overs. He further considers Team India fortunate in this regard.

“And in a high scoring WC, having bowlers who can take wickets in the middle will be very important. I think India is lucky in that regard,” Dravid added.

Meanwhile, India will enter the mega ICC event as favourites alongside hosts England and reigning champions – Australia.

Dravid is keen to see India making it to the semis of the World Cup. He said that things wouldn’t be that easy during the impending World Cup which will commence from May 30.

“I think it’s going to be a tough World Cup. Every team comes well prepared and wants to compete. I would say India is definitely one of the favourites into the tournament. And all of us can be hopeful,” Dravid remarked.

Before the kick-off of the Indian Premier League (IPL) India lost the home series to Australia by 3-2.

However, with each player raring to go in the World Cup, Dravid reiterated India has enough options as wicket-takers in the form of Jasprit Bumrah and the spin duo – Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav, who looked bleak for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the IPL 2019.

“People like (Jasprit) Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal… (We have) got bowlers who can take wickets. Teams that are taking wickets through those middle-overs in those high scoring games have a better chance of restricting the opposition,” Dravid further said.

The batting veteran maintained India had done exceedingly well in the recent past. He added India could be optimistic following consistent performances to sit at No. 2 in the ICC ODI rankings.

“I think we have had a couple of really good years leading to the World Cup. For the right reasons, we are No. 2 in the World and that actually means that we have consistently produced some successful results in the last two and a half years. We can be hopeful,” Dravid ellaborated.

Ahead of the kick-off of the mega tourney, India will face New Zealand and Bangladesh in its two warm-up games on May 25 and 28 respectively. The two venues for the practice games are The Oval and Cardiff.
