On Wednesday, the Indian fans received heart-breaking news of Shikhar Dhawan being ruled out from the Indian National Cricket team. The flamboyant batsman couldn’t quite recover from his finger injury, thus, ruling out from the tournament. Meanwhile, Rishabh Pant gets the nod to join the squad and also gets the official acceptance from ICC.
Shikhar Dhawan was formally ruled out of the World Cup on Wednesday. It is exactly 10 days after the Indian opener was hit on his left hand by a Pat Cummins‘ delivery during India’s match against Australia.
Rishabh Pant, who was immediately brought to England as a back-up while the Indian team management waited for thumb and foot on Dhawan to recover, has now been named as Dhawan’s replacement in India’s 15-man squad.
The ICC Rule says:
“The replacement of a player requires the approval of the Event Technical Committee before the replacement player can be officially added to the squad. The Event Technical Committee of the ICC World Cup 2019 consists of Geoff Allardice (ICC, ETC chairman). And also, Campbell Jamieson (ICC representative), Steve Elworthy (CWC representative). Alan Fordham (host representative), Harsha Bhogle and Kumar Sangakkara (both independent representatives).”
Following the rule, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has confirmed. The Event Technical Committee of the Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019 has approved Rishabh Pant as a replacement player for Shikhar Dhawan in India’s squad for the remainder of the tournament, BCCI said.

As per IANS, it is learnt that Dhawan visited a specialist on Wednesday morning before the call to bring in Pant as a replacement was taken.
Explaining the nature of the fracture, BCCI tweeted: “Dhawan has been diagnosed with a fracture. It is on the first metacarpal on his left hand following a ball impact injury. It was during the team’s second match versus Australia at the Oval on 9th June 2019.”
Well, this is unfortunate for the Indian team. Shikhar Dhawan has been a vital player for the team. In the absence of Shikhar Dhawan, KL Rahul had opened India’s innings with Rohit Sharma against Pakistan. Rahul was impressive in that match scoring 57 and sharing a record 136-run stand for the 1st wicket.
Most probably, KL Rahul will remain taking the same slot for the team in the upcoming matches as well. As of now, India would stick with Vijay Shankar at number 4 before considering the likes of Dinesh Karthik or Rishabh Pant.
