ICC World Cup 2019: Sanjay Manjrekar Picks India’s Playing XI Against South Africa
Former Indian batsman Sanjay Manjrekar has picked India’s playing XI for their World Cup opener against South Africa, set to be played at Southampton on June 5. In fact, Manjrekar has a surprise at the troublesome position of number four. Manjrekar has backed the rookie batsman Vijay Shankar to bat at the number four position.
Shankar had done well in the recent series against New Zealand and Australia. Thus, Manjrekar has picked Vijay Shankar ahead of Rishabh Pant and Ambati Rayudu. In fact, Ambati Rayudu has batted at the number four position. However, he was dropped from India’s playing XI from the last two One Day Internationals against Australia.
Manjrekar selects Vijay Shankar to bat at number four.
Sanjay Manjrekar has picked the expected top three batsmen – Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli. There have been talks about Virat Kohli’s batting position and he was backed by Ravi Shastri to bat at number four. However, Manjrekar believes Kohli should bat at his norm position of number three come what may.
Manjrekar has selected Kedar Jadhav to bat number five for the India National Cricket Team. Jadhav brings stability to the team with his added side-arm off-spin. Former Indian skipper MS Dhoni, who has roared back to form bats at number six in the side for the former Mumbai batsman.
Hardik Pandya takes the number seven position in the side whereas Bhuvneshwar Kumar also makes the cut. In fact, there would be a tough competition between Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammed Shami. Manjrekar has picked Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav as the two spinners in his side.
Both these spinners have done a tremendous job in the last two years and have been instrumental in the success of the team. Jasprit Bumrah who has taken giant strides in his career also gets a place in the side.
