ICC World Cup 2019: Should India Prefer Ravindra Jadeja Over Vijay Shankar for Edgbaston Game Against England?
With England facing heat at the business end of league stage fixtures, India, on the other side, looks more in control with an almost settled playing XI. But, yet the Men in Blue facing some problem in the middle-order line-up which seems only concern for the Virat Kohli, in particular as they’re about to make it to the semi-finals of the twelfth edition of the ICC World Cup.
On Sunday (June 30), the top-two ranking ICC’s ODI teams will battle it out at Edgbaston in Birmingham. In between, India could test their line with a change or so in a bid to bring more stability in the batting department.
Thus far, the Tamil Nadu-based 28-year-old all-rounder Vijay Shankar, who mostly played at No. 4 spot hasn’t been that effective. He managed to pick two wickets against Pakistan and didn’t roll over his arm against Afghanistan and the Windies. In three matches, Shankar scored 57 runs which included a best of 29 against Afghanistan in Southampton.
ICC World Cup 2019: All eyes on Jadeja for Edgbaston tie against England –
The 30-year-old Jadeja’s is expected to be an ideal choice. He could equally pay rich dividends with the ball on a sluggish Edgbaston surface.
While talking about the 22-yard Birmingham surface, it has been more on the slower side in two matches played during the ongoing World Cup so far. And the brave slow left-arm orthodox spinner with his bag of tricks has all the potential and wealth of experience to trouble long English batting line-up.
However, Jadeja partook in India’s two warm-up matches which came against New Zealand and Bangladesh. He managed to pick a couple of wickets apart from scoring a hard-fought fifty against the Black Caps.
The left-handed batsman remained unbeaten against the Tigers on 11 at the Cardiff on May 28, 2019.
Following back-to-back losses against Australia after Sri Lanka, the Three Lions will be under pressure to win their both remaining against India and New Zealand – to qualify for the semis.
However, a win for India would mean that they will almost confirm their semi-final spot alongside Australia.
With average first innings score recorded as 241, the Indian team management would have given a thought about their playing XI and options to look at. On the other hand, the dry surface would make things pretty easier for the slow bowlers. It is expected to grip and spin.
Also, the inclusion of Jadeja will allow Kohli to pick bowlers from the pool of options available. Besides, his availability would add depth in the batting line-up if Bhuvneshwar Kumar won’t feature against England following Mohammad Shami’s brilliance.
So far, Jajdeja has patrolled the boundary ropes as a substitute during the World Cup matches. He would be raring to perform at the mega ICC event. His remarkable average at Edgbaston also reveals how players have contributed to a team’s success.
Jadeja’s record at Edgbaston is excellent:
In five ODI fixtures, Jadeja has bagged nine wickets with his bowling average reading as 20.56. Also, he has stemmed the run flow by conceding 4.36 runs in an over.
Jadeja has taken nine wickets so far in the five ODI matches he has played in Edgbaston. He bowled at an incredible average of 20.56 and an exceptional economy of 4.36. Thus, he is the leading wicket-taker for India at this particular venue.
With fast-approaching knockout stage fixtures, the spinners could bask the glory on worn down English pitches during the ongoing ICC World Cup 2019.
Second, on World Cup team standings, India has bagged eleven points in six matches. Whereas, England has eight points in seven games to face late jolt.
