ICC World Cup 2019: Twitter Reacts As New Zealand Pacers Put Check To Sri Lankan Batting
Jun 2, 2019 at 4:10 PM
New Zealand bowlers on top of their mark on Saturday against Sri Lanka. The Kiwis won the toss and put Sri Lanka to bat first on a green pitch under overcast conditions.
Cardiff had not been a happy hunting ground for Sri Lanka and they once again fell behind on Saturday. Although, credit has to go to New Zealand bowlers for rattling Sri Lankan batting, poor shot selection and lack of application cost the island nation dearly.
Matt Henry opened the bowling and immediately removed opener Lahiru Thirimanne on the second ball of the day. But, Dimuth Karunaratne and Kusal Perera stitched a 42 run partnership for the second wicket. However, once Perera perished, New Zealand bowlers ran rout on Sri Lanka’s middle order.
Middle Order Failed Once Again
From a position of 46/1, Sri Lanka were reduced to 60/6 as the middle order completely failed on the day. In a span of six overs, they lost five wickets and had no answers to New Zealand bowlers. Thisara Perera played a handy 27 to support his skipper Karunaratne.
But even he could not stop the onslaught of New Zealand seamers on seam friendly conditions. Karunaratne is the only player who read the conditions and played accordingly. He remained unbeaten at 52 at the end of their innings. Therefore, he became only the second player ver to carry his bat in a World Cup match.
Eight of the Sri Lankan players were dismissed for a single digit. This also includes seven players with scores less than 5. New Zealand bowlers clearly enjoyed the conditions and made the most of it. Matt Henry and Lockie Ferguson impressed with three wickets each. All bowlers contributed to inflict the damage.
Although Asian teams are struggling to cope up with seam, Sri Lanka should be worried. Their performance is way below par.
Here is how Twitter Reacted with New Zealand’s Bowling Display

Looks like it will be a fight between Bangladesh and Afghanistan for the second best team from Asia in #CWC19 #NZvSL
Very very poor application shown by Pakistan yesterday and srilanka today. No Devils in the pitch!— Reacher (@RaOne31) June 1, 2019

Yesterday, Pakistan collapsed. Today, Sri Lanka is collapsing. Tomorrow, if Bangladesh also collapses, we’ll finally have Akhand Bharat under the Modi Government.#NZvSL

Ferguson is a gun bowler with proper wheels. Could be a key asset to this New Zealand line up to compliment the skill sets of their other seamers #CWC19
