ICC World Cup 2019: Wasim Jaffer Appointed As Bangladesh Batting Consultant
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has roped in Wasim Jaffer as the batting coach for game development. One of India’s domestic cricket stalwarts, Jaffer will be working with batsmen of Bangladesh in the upcoming tour to Sri Lanka. He will be accompanied by Champaka Ramanayake.
Earlier, the former India opener Wasim Jaffer has been roped in by Bangladesh Cricket Board as the batting consultant for its academy in Mirpur. The development was confirmed by a senior BCB official. However, now, they asked him to train the batsmen of the senior team.
Bangladesh’s current batting consultant Neil McKenzie, who just looks after the Tigers ODI batting, is not available for the series against Sri Lanka due to his personal affair while the BCB deiced not to renew the contract of fast bowling coach Courtney Walsh, leaving the two important posts vacant.
Wasim Jaffer will be batting coach – BCB Chairman
Jaffer was appointed for the batting consultant of High Performance (HP) team for just a week ago while Ramanayake has been working with HP for quite some time now. Both of the HP coaches were seen working with the national players after they returned to country from the disappointing World Cup outing.
“Champaka [Ramanayake] is also a very good bowling coach and we have him as our backup and now we will take him to this tour. Look, some of our coaches had requested for leave during the time of Sri Lanka tour as there was some problem regarding the tour [after the terrorist attack] and only was confirmed in the recent past.”
”If McKenzie is unable to give us time [that is likely to be the case] then we will take Wasim Jaffer as the batting coach,” cricket operation chairman Akram Khan said on Monday as per Cricbuzz.
Jaffer played 19 seasons for Mumbai before representing Vidarbha. He was instrumental in guiding them to two consecutive Ranji Trophy titles, which has been acknowledged by the players of the team. He is the most prolific run-getter in the history of Ranji Trophy. Wasim Jaffer crossed the 11,000-mark during the 2018’19 season.
Besides that, Wasim Jaffer has played 31 Test matches for India and scored 1,944 runs with the highest score of 212. He also played two One Day Internationals.
