The ICC, on Tuesday (June 27), announced the schedule for the upcoming ICC World Cup 2023. The much-awaited tournament is scheduled to be played from October 5 to November 19 in India.
While India have co-hosted the competition thrice in the past, they will be hosting it alone for the first time. The tournament will get underway with the match between last edition’s finalists England and New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Hosts India, on the other hand, will open their campaign on October 5 with a mouth-watering clash against five-time world champions Australia in Chennai.
A total of 10 teams will participate in ICC World Cup 2023. The first eight teams have already qualified through the Cricket World Cup Super League while the final two spots will be determined at the end of the ongoing ICC World Cup Qualifier 2023 in Zimbabwe, which concludes on July 9.
As far as the format of the World Cup is concerned, each team will the other nine in a round robin format with the top four qualifying for the knockout stage and semifinals. The tournament will be played across 10 venues – Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Dharamsala, Delhi, Chennai, Lucknow, Pune, Bengaluru, Mumbai and Kolkata. Guwahati and Thiruvananthapuram in addition to Hyderabad will host the warm-up matches from 29 September to 3 October.
ICC World Cup 2023 – South Africa World Cup schedule:
South Africa will begin their quest for their first-ever World Cup title on October 7 against the Qualifier team in Delhi. 6 days later, they will be against Australia in Lucknow before taking on the other Qualifier on October 17 in Dharamsala.
4 days later, the Proteas will take on defending champions England in Mumbai before locking horns against Bangladesh at the same venue on October 24. Their final league game is scheduled to be played against Afghanistan on November 10.
