Bowlers running out batters at the non-striker’s end for backing up too far used to be a rare one. However, with ICC Rules such dismissals have become quite common in recent times. Kumar Sangakkara said that bowlers should not be treated as a villain for this kind of dismissal.
Many cricket experts were divided by their opinions over the dismissal on the non-striker end. Many cricketers including Ravichandran Ashwin were vocal about their stand. While the ICC amended its rule book in October 2022, the run-outs in non-striker end as unfair, and ICC has called for non-striker end run-out to be normalized at all age-group levels.
“The overriding factor is that there is a simple way that all confusion and controversy around this form of dismissal can be eradicated – by non-strikers complying with the Law and remaining within their ground until they have seen the ball being released from the bowler’s hand,” the MCC said in a statement.
The World Cricket Committee of the MCC, which met at the ICC headquarters in Dubai said that the runout is within the law. The WCC comprises greats of the game including Sourav Ganguly, Kumar Sangakkara, Justin Langer, and Alastair Cook, with Mike Gatting being the chairman.
“The bowler is not the villain here. Every batter has a choice; to stay in their ground, or risk being given out if they try to steal ground. If they choose the latter, they are the ones who are breaking the Law,” said Sri Lankan great Sangakkara.
The former Sri Lankan Captain said that the bowler should not be treated as a villain in such a case, as the dismissals come under the laws of ICC, he said that it is the choice of the batters to take risks and blame should not be put in the bowlers.
