ICC World T20 2016: Five turning points of Australia vs Bangladesh

Australia registered their first victory of the ICC World T20 2016 by beating Bangladesh by 3 wickets at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru. It was a good performance by the Australian bowlers to restrict Bangladesh to 156. The Australian batsmen apart from Khawaja did not play proper strokes gave away wickets. Australia won the match by 3 wickets with 9 balls to spare.

 Good bowling by Australian bowlers at the start

Australia won the toss and choose to bowl. The Australian bowlers gave the team a perfect start by dismissing Soumya Sarkar in the 2nd over of the innings. Nathan Coulter-Nile and Shane Watson exploited bounce on the pitch. Sabbir Rahaman played some wonderful strokes but was dismissed by Shane Watson. At the end of first six over’s Bangladesh only scored 33 runs for the loss of 2 wickets. The Bangladesh batsmen did not rotate strike and tried to play many shots.

Impressive spell by Zampa

Adam Zampa was brought by Smith in the 9th over. He picked the important wicket of Mithun Ali. Zampa was impressive with his flight and variations. In his 2nd over he went for a four and six in the first two balls and then picked the wicket of Hom with a good ball. He did not allow the batsmen to hit big strokes. In his last over he picked the wicket of Shakib Al Hasan. In his four over’s he gave away 23 and picked 3 crucial wickets to stall the Bangladesh progress.

Mahmudullah late flurry helped Bangladesh post a respectable total

Mahmudullah came to the crease in the 12th over when Bangladesh was struggling at 80 for 4. He played two wonderful shots for a four and six of Hastings ball. In the 15th over Shakib Al Hasan was dismissed and all the pressure was on Mahmudllah to score runs quickly. He smashed three fours of Faulkner bowling in the 17th over and also continued to play excellent shots of Watson bowling in the next over too. In the last few over’s Mahmdullah quickfire knock of 49 off 29 balls helped Bangladesh post a decent total of 156 for 5 in 20 over’s.

Usman Khawaja providing a solid foundation

Chasing a total of 157, Usman Khawaja provided the Australian team a perfect start. He attacked the Bangladesh bowling right from the start. He played the spinners and fast bowlers with authority and did not allow the bowlers to settle on a particular line and length. In the first six over’s Australia scored 51 for 0 out of which Usman Khawaja scored 36. After the fall of Watson wicket, Khawaja continued to pick gaps and take singles also. He completed his 50 off 36 balls and was finally dismissed for a well-made 58 giving Australia a good foundation.

Maxwell quick fire 26 off 15 balls

Maxwell came to the crease as Australia was 119 for 4. Maxwell played a quickfire knock of 26 in 15 balls. In the 15th, he smashed 2 boundaries of Saqlin. When Marsh was dismissed he smacked two sixes of fast bowler Rahman bowling which made the equation cut down to 9 off 18 balls. In the 17th over Maxwell was dismissed playing a poor stroke. After that, Hastings was dismissed too. Faulkner made sure that Australia won the match and keep their hopes alive of reaching the semi-finals.
