Reigning world champions Australia have opened their account in the ICC World Test Championship Points Table for 2023-25 cycle (WTC Points Table) with a thrilling win over England in the first Ashes Test.

The third cycle of the WTC began on a stunning note as England and Australia played out one of the best Tests of all time at Edgbaston. The celebrated rivalry between the two nations lived up to the expectations as the cricketing world witnessed five days of pulsating action. In the end, Australia defied all the odds to win the Test by 2 wickets and take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

On a tense final day, Australia began on 107 for 3 while chasing 281. And the game looked all but over for them when Joe Root dismissed Alex Carey to leave the Aussies reeling at 227 for 8. With no recognised batsman left, the game looked done and dusted. However, Australia skipper Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon had other ideas.

The two went on to add an unbroken 55 to break England’s hearts and power their team to a memorable victory. Cummins led the charge with the bat, scoring an unbeaten 44 with the help of 4 fours and 2 sixes while Lyon remained unbeaten on 16. The win is Australia’s narrowest Ashes win in terms of wickets since 1907.

Updated ICC WTC Points Table:

Thanks to the stunning win, Australia have defended their title defence in style. Having defeated India earlier this month in the ICC WTC final, Australia have become the first team to open their account in the ICC WTC Points Table for the third cycle. As far as India are concerned, they will start their campaign next month with a two-match series against West Indies.
