I’m Not Sure What Graeme Smith Knows About Australian Cricket: Steve Smith

Following a loss against the visiting South African team in the first hard-fought Test at Perth, the former Proteas captain, Graeme Smith, commented on the loss of Australian team, figuring out their frailties to which Steve Smith said “I look at him and you kind of think he’s trying to figure a lot of stuff out at the moment, but as a leader, I think you need to understand that for yourself about who you are and that’s the only time you can really get your team to play with that personality. I think he’s trying to figure that all out at the moment. It certainly looks that way and he looks a bit lost.”

An under scanner Smith, who is having a rough time since the Test series against Sri Lanka in the month of July/August, did not take it easy, a day before the game in the pre-match conference, he responded to Graeme’s judgement, “I’m not sure what Graeme Smith knows about Australian cricket,” Smith said. “He obviously wasn’t involved in it. I think the team’s in a good place at the moment, we’ve got a good culture, built on constant improvement and getting better. The guys are in a good place, we’re a tight-knit group and we’re ready to hopefully turn this around this week,”.

“I’ve seen a lot of the criticism and I guess when you’re losing cricket games that sort of criticism is warranted so we’ve got to try and turn it around and play the way that Australia does best and that’s by winning games of cricket in Australia,” added Smith.

Despite being surrounded by so much of criticism and unfavourable results, Australian captain is not taking all these easily and is hitting back to whatever words coming from any of the camps. Well, in the end, it is the runs on the board and results of the series which matter. Surely, a change in fortune of Australian team will be the best answer to all this whereas an opposite result can also put his captaincy under doubt due to continued failures.

The second Test between the two teams starts from Saturday, November 12 at Hobart. However, rain can play a spoilsport in the game. Callum Ferguson is likely to make his debut in Test cricket whereas Kyle Abbott might replace Dale Steyn for South Africa.
