Ravichandran Ashwin has been reportedly appointed as the vice-captain of the Indian Test team. Deccan Chronicle has reported the selection panel, consisting of five members (MSK Prasad, Jatin Paranjape, Gagan Khoda, Devang Gandhi and Sarandeep Singh) have unanimously picked the world number one Test bowler to become the deputy of Virat Kohli.
As per the report, a source in the BCCI has revealed the selectors’ choice was conveyed to the governing body on Thursday and the board is likely to announce the appointment in the next 24 hours. Ashwin will replace Ajinkya Rahane, who was named the vice-captain of the team before the West Indies tour. However, the Mumbai batsman was ruled out of the ongoing series against England after being hit on the right index finger during practice which forced the selectors to choose a new deputy for Kohli.
Well, one can say that the Tamil Nadu spinner fully deserves the post. He has been in sensational form this year both with the bat and the ball. With 65 wickets in 11* matches, the off-spinner is leading the list of highest wicket-takers this year. In batting, he has accumulated 545 runs at an average of over 45. He has bagged the Man of the Series award in the last two series and is in line to pick up another after scoring 239 runs and picking up 21 wickets so far in the ongoing series.
