IND vs AUS 2017, 1st ODI: Twitter Reacts as Pandya’s Blitz, Dhoni’s Calmness Save India’s Day
Sep 17, 2017 at 6:01 PM
Australia suffered a late bashing at the hands of Hardik Pandya after a dominating start to the match which saw India recover from a calamitous start of 87/5 to end with 281 for seven in the first innings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai.
After terming the decision to move to bat first, as “no-brainer”, skipper Kohli was left at the mercy of the pitch which exhibited unprecedented bounce. Inside the first six overs, the top order comprising of Ajinkya Rahane, Virat Kohli and Manish Pandey were forced to walk back to the pavilion.
Nathan Coulter Nile was the man in action and left the opposition stunned by all mean. Rohit Sharma and Kedar Jadhav held things together and helped Indian weather the early storm with a 53-run stand between them.
However, Soon, another slump was witnessed, as both set men were dismissed by all-rounder Marcus Stoinis in a short succession, leaving India at a worrisome 87/5. But, just when things looked to be going away from India, MS Dhoni along with Pandya decided to bring things under their control.
The duo began dealing in singles and doubles to keep the scoreboard active. After spending close to 15 overs playing defensively and counterattacking, Pandya switched to aggression and propelled the scoring rate.
MS Dhoni’s calm approach meant the fearless Pandya had nothing to bother about, not to mention; he was well-settled after spending an hour in the middle. His aggression grew from strength to strength and reached its peak when Adam Zampa was brought in. His natural instinct to go after spinners was in a naked display when he smacked Zampa for a hat-trick of sixes in the 37th over of the match.
Steve Smith’s decision to neglect one of Pandya’s basic batting characteristics, as Australia inflicted some serious blows. Eventually, Zampa did get the revenge, as he had the last laugh in the 41st over by dismissing Pandya and breaking the 118 runs 6th wicket stand. But the young Baroda star had created the impact which was required and returned with 83 from just 66 balls with the help of five fours and as many sixes each (four off Zampa alone).
MS Dhoni provided the final boost to the scoreboard and ended graciously with a personal score of 79 from 88 deliveries. His effort today also saw him complete his 100th fifty as well. The pitch is expected to slow down further, and the hostile rivalry may see another thriller on Sunday if the Australian top-order manages to get going in the same fashion Indi’s lower middle-order did. Batting certainly became easier and easier as the overs passed by for India. It was evident from Pandya’s onslaught and Dhoni’s easy picking between the wickets.
Therefore, a couple of string partnerships is all Australia needs to get hold of India’s nerve.
