IND vs AUS 2017: I Think Rahane Needs to be Given a Specific Role – Pravin Amre
With the withdrawal of Shikhar Dhawan from the first three ODIs of the series against Australia, it has opened the doors for Ajinkya Rahane again, to walk into the playing XI and open the innings in the absence of the regular opener.
Though his role is not specified yet and he has to depend upon the non-availability of Dhawan or Rohit Sharma to find a place in the team.

Despite Rahane doing well for India in ODI cricket, he is not someone towards whom the captain looks as the prime available option for and his place in the team is remains in jeopardy.
Pravin Amre, the former Indian cricketer and Rahane’s coach has raised the same issue, as he has batted for a particular role for the batsman in the team,
“I think he needs to be given a specific role. With India set to play a lot of limited-overs cricket in the next few months, Rahane has been working on specific drills to suit his game for ODIs,” Amre told PTI.
Further, Amre said despite India looking him as an opener; the batsman can do well in the middle-order as well,
“He is one special player who can adapt to any situation and can play in any position. Going by the past, the Indian team seems to be looking at him as an opener in ODIs, but he can do well in the middle, which he proved in the 2015 World Cup in Australia”.
It is a fact that Rahane has done well in limited-over cricket, but questions have been raised when he is batting in the middle order. In fact, he has been dropped from the team due to the same reason and now, he has been given the role in opening the innings, only when the regular opener is not present.

The highest run-scorer of series against West Indies is all set to open the innings once again, as skipper might not look towards KL Rahul for the same job, due to his form in ODI cricket. In 10 ODIs, he has just scored 248 runs, with 100 of them coming in his debut against Zimbabwe last year.
Though he is an option in T20I cricket, but not in the ODIs as of now and Rahane might continue to come alongside Rohit Sharma to face the first ball.
The first ODI of the series against Australia to be played in Chennai on September 17.
