IND vs AUS 2017: Umesh Yadav Raring to Take More Responsibility as the Senior Bowler

The Story

Umesh Yadav is on the verge of getting an opportunity to play in front of his home crowd in Nagpur when India play their final ODI on Sunday.

The 29-year-old has taken four wickets in the 4th ODI in Bengaluru after being picked in the team for the first time in the series.

With the series in pockets, Kohli may continue to rest the pair of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah and keep Umesh along with Mohammad Shami in the XI. The loss in Bengaluru, which ended India’s winning streak of nine ODIs, will not likely force Kohli to make any changes in the side.

Fit to play in all three Formats

Umesh Yadav just busted the myth surrounding the rest factor that is being discussed a lot these days. He asserted he is fit enough to play all three formats of the game. Both Umesh and Shami, the lead fast bowler in the Test format, were rested for the first three games to ensure freshness. The growing workload has become a concern for players with injuries becoming a more common thing. However, Yadav feels more cricket is always good for the body of a fast bowler.

“I think ODIs will continue to be played more than Tests and I like Test cricket because you have time. I like Test because you have situations and match analysis and I like those challenges. Challenges like picking wickets on slow wickets as a fast bowler. These things bring more confidence in you, and you become accurate because you know how to bowl on this wicket and focus more on bowling there”, Umesh said in the pre-match presser in Nagpur.

“I think I am more than happy to play Test cricket. In ODIs, you have less time due to format. It’s good if you play both ODI and Test, but I think it’s good for me to play cricket in any format. In my age, I would love to play all formats, and it’s good for me. I would love to play all formats.”

Need to be More Responsible

He also stayed away from being overly critical about the recent loss and just conceded the fact the bowlers need to be more responsible.

“It’s good (atmosphere is dressing room). We know we lost the game but batsmen put in a good effort. We gave 15-20 runs extra, and we have to control that. Mohammed Shami and me played after a long time.”

“But, we are senior bowlers and have to take responsibility. We have to bowl whatever the team needs from us. There is a little bit like good balls and bad balls, but I think everything went well. As fast bowlers, Shami and me have to take more responsibility at death overs otherwise everything is okay,” Umesh added.
