Former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar has made a bold prediction for Virat Kohli ahead of the upcoming second Test between India and Australia in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy series.
The second Test of the four-match series is scheduled to be played in Delhi from February 17. And as India will be looking to take an unassailable lead in series, their former captain Virat Kohli will be desperate to get some runs under his belt.
The batting superstar has been going through a lean patch in Tests for quite some time now. He has not scored a century in the longest format of the game since hitting one during the 2019 day-night Test against Bangladesh at the Eden Gardens.
Since that Test, he has played 21 games without a century. During this period, the India batting star has scored only 929 runs at a modest average of 25.80, including six half-centuries. His highest score during this period has been only 79.
Sunil Gavaskar’s prediction for Virat Kohli:
While Virat Kohli will be keen to score big in Delhi, Sunil Gavaskar has predicted that the batting superstar might end his Test century drought at his home ground.
“See there is just one innings and there are three more Test matches left. A player of his stature is expected to score in every match. But this was just one innings and I feel the century comeback can be a possibility on his home ground in Delhi,” Gavaskar told India Today.
Speaking further, Gavaskar lavished praise on India skipper Rohit Sharma. The opening batsman led the team from the very front in the first Test. He scored one of his finest centuries in the game in Nagpur to help India pile up 400 runs in the first innings.
“It was a captain’s innings where he recognized he had to show the way and he showed the way. Because it wasn’t easy to bat on. He likes the pitch where the ball comes on the bat quite nicely,” said the legendary former cricketer.
“And this pitch although there was not the kind of turn that people were talking about, it was a pitch where the ball didn’t quite come on to the bat. So for him to show the kind of enormous patience that he did. To be able to show the application that he did. He led from the front,” he added.
